Bodiam Ferry Company
East Sussex: Newenden-Bodiam Castle
The
Bodiam Ferry Company
operates the delightful little
Danny Lee
(24 passengers) along the River Rother between Newenden Bridge and Bodiam Castle.
Danny Lee
is run in association with an adjacent Tea Garden. Cruise & Dine options are also available with the White Heart Inn. Rowing boat hire is also available. The Kent & East Sussex Railway runs in parallel.
The Newenden-Bodiam service has been run by the current owner, Michael Berry, for 17 years, and
Danny Lee
is the second vessel used. She is an ex-Royal Navy lifeboat which has received an £8500 overhaul prior to the 2007 season. As part of this, the original boxed-in, foam-filled seats have been removed. The distinctive funnel was originally carried by her predecessor to remove excess exhaust fumes from the engine. On
Danny Lee
it merely provides some additional ventilation to the fire-proofed engine compartment.
The River Rother is navigable for 14 miles from a lock at Rye to Bodiam.
Danny Lee
covers the final 4 miles on her regular trips, but also regularly travels downstream on charters.
