Song of Norway
Song of Norway - Sundream - Dream Princess - Dream

This page is devoted to postcards and photographs of the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line ship Song of Norway. Song of Norway was the first ship built for Royal Caribbean, being delivered from Helsinki builders Wartsila in 1970. She was 18000 tons as built, and carried 724 passengers. Her sisters was Nordic Prince (also lengthened) and the slightly modified design Sun Viking. In 1978, Song of Norway was lengthened by 85 feet, to carry a total of 1024 passengers and increase size to 23000 gross tons. Song of Norway initially operated on 7 and 14-day cruise out of Miami, but later served throughout the world, breaking new territories for RCCL, when superseded by larger ships in the Caribbean. Song of Norway was sold to Sun Cruises in 1996, becoming the Sundream. The distinctive sky lounge on the funnel was removed as part of the deal, greatly improving her appearance. Sundream later received MyTravel livery, and continued operating for them until 26th September 2004. She was then laid up at Piraeus under the name Dream Princess. The MyTravel company website indicated that she would join Louis Cruise Lines along with other ships in the fleet. However, Dream Princess is cruising in 2005 for Caspi Cruises of Israel, sailing twice a week from Haifa and Ashdod to Larnaca and Limassol in Cyprus, Alanya and Marmaris in Turkey, and to Rhodes and Santorini in Greece. In early 2006 Dream Princess was renamed Dream (Princess Cruises' pressure?) in New Orleans in January 2006 where she was being used to house students from Tulane University after Hurricane Katrine. In November 2006 Dream was chartered to Gulf Dream Crusise, running out of Dubai, but the venture collapsed after one cruise. She was later acquired by the Clipper Group as Clipper Pearl and is due to replace The Topaz with the PeaceBoat Organization in 2008 as Clipper Pacific.

The official RCCL card below shows Song of Norway her original condition.
She is photographed at Oslo (original headquarters of RCCL) presumably on her delivery voyage from Helsinki to Miami.

Sundream
(Airtours: 1996-2004)

Sundream was built in 1971 as the Song of Norway, the second of three Royal Caribbean sister ships. As with sister ship Nordic Prince/Carousel, she was lengthened in 1978. She was bought by Airtours in 1996. As with Carousel, part of the sale agreement was that the distinctive RCI 'Sky Lounge' around the funnel was removed, improving the ship's appearance in the process. This did not apply to subsequent RCI sales, the Sun Viking and Song of America. For the summer of 2000 she operated a series of cruises from the UK, and a series of photographs of Sundream at Southampton in August 2000 are shown on this link. Sundream later received MyTravel livery, and continued operating for them until 26th September 2004. In early 2005 she was laid up at Piraeus under the name Dream Princess. No further details are available yet, although there are rumours that she will become a casino ship. The MyTravel company website indicated that she would join Louis Cruise Lines along with other ships in the fleet.

Dream Princess - Dream
(Caspi Cruises: 2005- )

In early 2005 Sundream was being refitted in Piraeus under the name Dream Princess. (I was surprised that Princess Cruises' lawyers did not stamp on this name!) The MyTravel company website indicated that Sundream would join Louis Cruise Lines along with other ships in the fleet. However, whilst Louis Cruise Lines took the vessel on a full ship management contract from April-October 2004, it appears that she was never purchased by Louis. Instead, Sundream was sold by its owners, a consortium of banks, to the Israeli Caspi group for about $15-million and renamed Dream Princess. Targeting the local market, the 1,076 lower berth ship sailed on 4- and 3-night cruises from Haifa to Alanya, Rhodes, Larnaca or Limassol throughout the summer of 2005 until November. Some itineraries also included Marmaris and Santorini. She was later renamed Dream (Princess Cruises' pressure?) in New Orleans in January 2006 where she was being used to house students from Tulane University after Hurricane Katrine. She was later acquired by the Clipper Group as Clipper Pearl and is due to replace The Topaz with the PeaceBoat Organization in 2008 as Clipper Pacific.
