Northlink

 

 

Northlink won the tender to operate services to the Orkney and Shetland Isles from 2002, replacing P&O Ferries. They are a joint venture company of Caledonian MacBrayne and the Bank of Scotland. Caledonian MacBrayne's own routes will also be put to tender.

 

Northlink ordered two ships, Hjaltland and Hrossay, of 12000 gross tons, and one, Hamnavoe, of 8600 gross tons from Aker Finnyards of Rauma, Finland. All three ships can carry 600 passengers, but the larger ships have cabin accommodation for 300 passengers. Additional cabins were added for the 2007 season.

Hjaltland & Hrossay

 

These images show the two larger 12000 gross ton vessels under order.

They are 125 m long, and are capable of the high speed of 24 knots.
