Frederick Carter

Frederick Carter - Fred - Flavia II - Athenia - Thenia - Hansa Link - Norse Lagan - Moby Rider

This page is devoted to postcards and photographs of the Moby Line ship Moby Rider, which originally served for nearly 20 years as the Canadian ferry Frederick Carter.

Frederick Carter was built by Davies Ship Building Ltd, Lauzon, Canada. Frederick Carter had been ordered by the Govenment of Canada for East Coast ferry services and began operating between North Sydney-Port aux Basques in 1967. In 1979, registered owners became CN Marine. In 1986 Frederick Carter was sold to Cypriot owners and renamed Fred. She was sold again the following year, becoming the Flavia II of Harma Shipping, Limassol, entering service for Anco Ferries between Patras-Ancona. In 1988, Flavia II was chartered to Olympic Ferries for a service Patras-Taranto. Flavia II was sold to Maltiki Marine Co Ltd, Limassol, in 1988 as the Athenia, but was sold on to Windepoint Shipping the following year as the Thenia. In 1990, following rebuilding in Poland, she entered service as Hansa Link for Nordö-Link between Malmö-Travemünde. She was by now one of the ugliest ferries afloat. The following year, 1991, Hansa Link was sold to a Dutch company and chartered to Norse Irish Ferries for their Liverpool-Belfast service as the Norse Lagan. Norse Lagan was bought by Norse Irish Ferries in 1996. She was laid up in November 1997, but had a charter with SeaWind Line during the summer of 1998, as shown in the postcard below. In 1998 Norse Lagan was sold to Moby Line, becoming their Moby Rider between Livorno-Olbia.
