Lynn Ferry
Kings Lynn - West Lynn
There has been a ferry across the Great Ouse at Lynn Ferry since at least 1285. The Trinity Guild of merchants acquired th rights in 1392, whsn it ran from Ferry Street next to the current Globe Hotel. The Corporation took over the rights in 1649, and tenants paid to run it, the first being a John Bird. By the late 1880s, the ferry had moved to its current location at the end of Ferry Lane, slightly up river from Ferry Street. Rowing boats persisted on the ferry until 1920, when two petrol driven boats were used, the fares being doubled at the same time. In 1973, the ferry rights passed to the County Council. In 1989, 340 years after leaving private ownership, it was sold by the council and has been privatelty run since then. Current operators are S.N.Kingston Marine Services of Kings Lynn. There are two aluminium catamarans used on the service, neither of which displays any name other than

on the hull sides. A number of previous ferries survive nearby.
There are two identical vessels used on the Lynn Ferry, neither of which had any other discernable name. I have temporarily distinguished them as 'A' and 'B' until I discover their true identities.
The service runs every 20 minutes from 7am to 6pm, Monday-Saturday, with continuous service in the morning and evening peaks. For more details phone:
