Hapag-Lloyd
These pages are devoted to postcards and photographs of the Hapag-Lloyd fleet, formed on 1st September 1970 by combining the fleets of Norddeutsche Lloyd and the Hamburg-America Line (Hapag). The page also covers cards of chartered ships issued by
Hapag-Lloyd Tours
.
An alphabetical list of ships
shown on this page is shown below.
The Table
beneath gives links to complete postcard history pages on selected individual ships. Below the table are official
postcards of the fleet
in chronological order.
Hapag-Lloyd inherited the two passenger liners
Bremen (5)
(ex-
Pasteur
) and
Europa (2)
(ex-
Kungsholm
). In July 1971, Hapag-Lloyd ceased liner voyages on the North Atlantic route, and concentrated totally on cruising. I do not believe the
Bremen (5)
ever received the new Hapag-Lloyd livery before sale to the Greek Line in 1971. The
Europa (2)
was repainted in new colours in 1972, and continued cruising until 1981 when the new
Europa (3)
was delivered (the new funnel colours applied to
Europa (2)
were not used on Hapag-Lloyd freighters until 1987). In 1993,
Europa (3)
, was joined by the smaller
Bremen (6),
which had been built as
Frontier Spirit
.
In 1997 the
Columbus (3)
joined the Hapag-Lloyd fleet, and in 1999,
Europa (3)
was replaced by
Europa (4)
, a super-luxury ship of 28600grt carrying only 408 passengers. Hapag-Lloyd also took over Hanseatic Tours in 1997, adding their ship the
Hanseatic(4)
to the fleet. Since the separate identity and livery of this ship has been maintained, it will covered on a separate page.

Hapag-Lloyd Fleet List
Bremen (5)
(HAPAG: 1970-1971)
The
Bremen (5)
passed to the combined Hapag-Lloyd fleet on 1st September 1970. She lasted only one year, being sold to Chandris Lines. She was renamed
Regina Magna
, and ran cruises worldwide until 1974, when laid up. Later used as an accommodation ship in Saudi Arabia, and sank in 1980 on the way to breakers in Taiwan. I do not believe that
Bremen (5)
ever received the Hapag-Lloyd livery, although Hapag-Lloyd Tours later issued a card of all six ships named
Bremen
, which is shown below.

Europa (2)
(HAPAG: 1970-1981)
Built in the Netherlands in 1953,
Europa (2)
was originally the Swedish American liner
Kungsholm (3).
She was the first of three striking two-funnelled liners built for Transatlantic service and cruising. The leading funnel on all three ships was a dummy. She was bought by Norddeutscher Lloyd in 1965, and passed to the combined Hapag-Lloyd fleet on 1st September 1970
.
In 1981, Costa bought the
Europa
, and renamed her
Columbus C
. In 1984 her keel fouled the rocks near a breakwater in Cadiz. She managed to reach the quay, but sank alongside soon afterwards. Although subsequently raised, she was sold for scrap in 1985.

Europa (3)
carried 770 passengers, and cruised worldwide for Hapag-Lloyd until 1999, when she passed to Star Cruises on delivery of
Europa (4)
. In 2000, she is the
SuperStar Aries

was issued for Raymond & Whitcomb, who arrange tours on her.
In 2001,
Bremen (6)
lost her distinctive blue hull, as shown in this official Hapag-Lloyd postcard.
Columbus (3)
(HAPAG: 1997- )
Columbus (3)
was built by MTW Schiffswerft, Wismar, Germany. She was completed for Hapag-Lloyd in 1997, is 14903grt in size, has dimensions 144.0 x 21.5 x 5.1 m, and she has 420 berths. Engines consist of 4 x Wartsila, 10560kW, giving a service speed of 18.5 knots. Note that the ship actually carries the name
c.Columbus
, but since Hapag refer to her simply as
Columbus
, I have followed suit on these pages.

Europa (4)
(HAPAG: 1999- )
Europa (4)
was built by Kvaerner Masa, Finland. She was completed for Hapag-Lloyd in 1999. Although of similar outline, she is larger than
Columbus
at 28600grt in size, but has only 408 berths. Her dimensions are 198.6 x 21.0 x 6.0 m. Engines consist of 4 x MAN B&W, 21606kW, giving a service speed of 21 knots. She replaced the 1981
Europa (3)
, now the
SuperStar Aries
of Star Cruises (originally renamed
SuperStar Europe
).
