later renamed
Solent Enterprise
. Since 2005 she has run on the Thames as
Sundance
for
Capital Pleasure Boats
Two modern new vessels were built for the
Portsmouth Harbour Ferry Company
by Thorneycroft's of Woolston, named
Portsmouth Queen
and
Gosport Queen
. They entered service in 1966, and proved to be very reliable once some initial teething troubles were ironed out. Each vessel can carry 500 passengers, an enormous improvement on the earlier vessels, and the two new ships replaced the four previously required at peak periods.
The new ferries were joined in 1971 by the larger
Gay Enterprise
, which ran excursions in the summer, and covered in the winter whilst the other two ferries were overhauled.
Gay Enterprise
was later renamed
Solent Enterprise
. She was joined by another excursion vessel, the
Southsea Queen
, in 1974, a much better-looking ship than the others then in the fleet.
Southsea Queen
was sold after only four years to the company running the
Hythe-Southampton
ferries.
Following reports of
Solent Enterprise
being offered for sale, she was photographed
on the River Thames
in London on 7th April 2005. She was bought by
Capital Pleasure Boats
, and renamed
Sundance
. She was later offered for sale again by
Capital Pleasure Boats
, and was sold to Danish owners for use as a private yacht, leaving the Thames on
10th October 2008
. In 2012 she opened as a restaurant in Svendborg, Denmark.
