Cogedar
Line
These pages
are devoted to postcards and photographs of the Cogedar fleet.
Cogedar was
an acronym for Compagnia Genovese di Armamento. their first passenger
ship was the Flaminia, following a rebuild of the freighter Genova
in 1954. They subsequently acquired two further passenger ships,
the Canadian
PacificBeaverbrae, and Cunard's Media, becoming the Aurelia
and Flavia respectively. Costa Line had always had a financial
interest in Cogedar, and in 1968 they took over the line completely.
Aurelia was sold to Chandris
Lines,
and Flavia joined the the Costa Lines fleet.
Flaminia was built as the American-Hawaii
SS Co Missourian of 1922. She was sold to the British
Government and renamed Empire Swan in 1940, and then passed
to the Belgian Government (in exile) as the Belgian Freighter
in 1942. She was later renamed Capitaine Potie and owned
by Cie Maritime Belge. In 1948 she passed to Cia.Genovese di
Armamento (Cogedar Line) as the Genova. In 1954 she was
rebuilt as the emigrant carrier Flaminia. She was sold in 1964,
and scrapped in 1970.

Line and renamed Aurelia, and ran various services Europe-Australia/New
Zealand. In 1970 she was sold again to Chandris Lines and renamed Romanza.

1991, when sold to Cypriot interests. Later burnt out.

Flavia
This ship
was originally built as the Cunard cargo-passenger liner Media
of 1947. She was sold to Cogedar in 1961 and rebuilt as the Europe-Australia
emigrant ship Flavia. In 1968 she was chartered to Costa,
who refitted her as a cruise ship. She operated Caribbean cruises
from Miami, and was so successful, Costa bought her in 1969.
Her engines became troublesome, so she was sold in 1982, having
various owners and names until being scrapped in 1989, having
never actually entered service again since leaving Costa.

Official
Cogedar postcard of Flavia, posted from Curacao to the
UK on 22/3/66.
The
message reads:- "Now we are 700 miles from England the
weather is getting a lot warmer and I am out on the lido deck
sunning myself.
The
Atlantic is beautifully calm and ever so blue, and we are all
well and truly settled in now. In about 3 days it will start
to get hot all the while
so
we can put our sun bathing clothes on and get lovely and brown.
There are quite a few pregnant mums here on board so I'm not
amongst strangers.
Some
passengers are Dutch and German and all are very nice."
