Britanis

Monterey - Matsonia - Lurline - Britanis - Belofin I

The Britanis was built as the Matson Lines' Monterey in 1931, for the California-Pacific islands-New Zealand-Australia service, paired with the Mariposa. After the war she became the Matsonia, not re-entering service until 1957. In 1963 she was renamed again, as the Lurline, when the previous ship of this name became the Ellinis. Sold to Chandris in 1970, she was renamed Britanis and initiated a round-the-world service Southampton - Sydney - Panama - Southampton in 1971. She moved to full time cruising in 1975.

Britanis was laid up at Tampa, Florida in 1995. Early in 1998, she was sold to Pakistani shipbreakers. A crew arrived to sail her there but were unable to start her engines. In April 1998 she was sold to Belofin Ltd and renamed Belofin I. She was due to be towed to Alang, India for breaking up. Before this happened, she was sold again for use as a floating hotel in San Francisco. It was suggested that she would be named Normandie and repainted in French Line colours. She remained laid up at Tampa throughout 1999 and much of 2000 before being sold again to Alang breakers. Attempts to fire up the boilers and get the engines working again failed, so a large Russian tug was arrived on July 3rd to tow her. The tow proceeded slowly and she called at ports in Brazil and Salvador for hull repairs, the tow recommencing on 20th September. As she approached the Cape of Good Hope on 20th October, she began to take on water and developed a list. On the 21st October the tug cut her loose and she sank soon afterwards.
