Lausanne-Ouchy
Day 1 - Monday 26th July 2004

After arrival at Lausanne-Ouchy around lunchtime, I spent the afternoon photographing the passing steamers. All eight CGN paddle steamers either pass through Ouchy, or are in the shipyard there, every day (although Savoie is in the enclosed dock so is not visible). Although very hot, there was high level cloud, so that the first day's photos do not look very bright. This weather was not repeated after this first afternoon.

Rochers-de-Naye & the Marmottes
Day 2 - Tuesday 27th July 2004

PS Rhône: Ouchy - Montreux
MGN: Montreux - Rochers-de-Naye - Montreux
PS Montreux: Montreux - Ouchy
MV Général Guisan: Ouchy - Yvoire - Ouchy (Evening Cruise)

Our first full day was spent ascending Rochers-de-Naye on the MGN, part of the MOB group. First we travelled to Montreux on the PS Rhône, which alternates with DEPV Vevey on the early morning return from Ouchy to St Gingolph and back. We travelled up the Train Belle Epoque which used one of the original electric rack locomotives, Montreux-Glion No.2. At the Rochers-de-Naye summit, is Marmottes Paradis! We returned from Montreux to Ouchy on the PS Montreux. In the evening we took the MV Général Guisan on her evening cruise to Yvoire. This is marketed as a Dinner Cruise, but the food was disappointing compared to all the other ships which we ate on.

The hot, sunny weather remained throughout the holiday.
The fireworks display on Sunday 1st August 2004 was deployed from gravel ships such as this one.

Rhône Express
Day 3 - Wednesday 28th July 2004

DEPV Vevey: Ouchy - Le Bouveret (Aquapark)
DEPV Vevey: Le Bouveret - Villeneuve
PS La Suisse: Villeneuve - St Gingolph - Ouchy - Nyon
MV Lausanne: Nyon - Yvoire
PS Montreux: Yvoire - Ouchy (Evening Cruise)

My original intention on the Wednesday was to travel the full length of Lake Geneva on the Rhône Express, picking up PS La Suisse at St Gingolph. I had never done this in one trip, but modified my plans as the day went on, so did not achieve it this time either. I took DEPV Vevey on her early morning return to St Gingolph, on which service she alternates with PS Rhône. However, I decided that I would get off at le Bouveret to take photographs of DEPV Vevey. I then picked up DEPV Vevey again after her short St Gingolph return, and took her as far as Villeneuve, which I thought would be a good place to photograph the arrival of PS La Suisse. I also photographed the VMCV trolleybuses at the Villeneuve terminus. I then caught PS La Suisse to St Gingolph, then back via Villeneuve (again), Montreux, Vevey, Ouchy, Evian and Yvoire to Nyon. The Rhône Express misses out many of the smaller piers. Whilst the intention had been to continue to Geneva, then catch a late train back to Lausanne, it seemed more sensible to disembark at Nyon, catch the large triple-screw MV Lausanne back to Yvoire, where she connects with PS Montreux back to Ouchy. I was not sure whether I would otherwise get to travel on MV Lausanne.

The second full day was again very hot and sunny.

Gruyères & Chocolat Factory
Day 4 - Thursday 29th July 2004

LO: Ouchy - Lausanne Gare CFF
SBB: Lausanne - Montreux
MOB: Montreux - Montbovon
GFM/TPF: Montbovon - Gruyères - Bulle - Broc Fabrique - Bulle - Palézieux
SBB: Palézieux - Lausanne
LO: Lausanne Gare CFF - Ouchy

Thursday was the only day we did not travel on a lake. We took the SBB train to Montreux, then the Super Panoramic Express of the MOB to Montbovon. We connected there with the TPF train to Gruyères. The TPF was previously run by GFM, known as La Gruyere, and their distinctive orange colour scheme is fast disappearing. After visiting the cheese factory, we continued on th TPF to Broc Fabrique, to visit the Cailler chocolate factory. We returned on TPF via Bulle to Palézieux, where we could again pick up an SBB train back to Lausanne. Bulle is the centre of La Gruyere operations, with much interesting stock of both metre and standard gauge. A separate page will be added to show this.

Chillon - Montreux - Nyon
Day 5 - Friday 30th July 2004

DEPV Vevey: Ouchy - Chillon
VMCV: Chillon - Montreux (swimming)
SBB: Montreux - Nyon
DEPV Italie: Nyon - Cully
PS Rhône: Cully - Ouchy

On Friday we visited the attractive castle at Chillon, travelling on the early morning run by DEPV Vevey to get there. From Chillon we took a VMCV trolleybus to Montreux, where Alastair went swimming in the lake. We then took an SBB train through to Nyon, where there is a small maritime museum. This allowed us to catch the DEPV Italie back to Ouchy. DEPV Italie is a great favourite of mine, but we had not otherwise managed to travel on her thus far. I remained on DEPV Italie past Ouchy as far as Cully, from where I could catch PS Rhône back to Ouchy.
