Orient Lines
(1992-2008)

These pages are devoted to postcards of the Orient Line formed in 1992 (not to be confused with the original Orient Line which became part of P&O). The Table below gives links to complete postcard histories of selected individual ships. Below the table are official postcards of the fleet in chronological order.

The new Orient Line began by acquiring the ex-Soviet liner Alexandr Pushkin. They had her substantially rebuilt between 1992-93 in Greece, and placed her on a varied and adventurous programme of cruises around the world. Subsequently Orient Line was taken over by Norwegian Cruise Line, who in turn have been bought by Star Cruises. The NCL ship Norwegian Crown has transferred to the Orient fleet, reverting to her original name of Crown Odyssey. One presumes that NCL will not make the same mistakes that they did with Royal Viking Line and Royal Cruise Line, which lost there individuality after their takeovers, and were eventually disbanded.

It was announced in March 2001 that the Star Cruises vessel SuperStar Aries would join the Orient Lines fleet in summer 2002 as the Ocean Voyager. SuperStar Aries was built as the HAPAG-Lloyd Europa in 1982. However, subsequent changes in global travel patterns resulted in Orient Lines reverting to a single ship in 2003, the Marco Polo.

In June 2007 it was announced that NCL would retire Marco Polo and the Orient Lines brand in March 2008 when Marco Polo arrives in Lisbon from Rio de Janeiro. Marco Polo has been sold to Transocean Tours and will operate a series of cruises from Tilbury between 10 April and 19 August 2008.

Crown Odyssey

Crown Odyssey was built in 1988 for Royal Cruise Line (RCL), who were taken over by NCL in 1989. NCL mismanaged the highly regarded Royal Cruise Line, and in 1996 all the ex-RCL ships were integrated into the more down-market NCL fleet. Crown Odyssey was renamed Norwegian Crown. Following the NCL purchase of Orient Lines (who will retain their separate identity), Norwegian Crown was transferred, regaining her original name Crown Odyssey in the process.

In November 2002, it was announced that Crown Odyssey would return to the NCL fleet in September 2003. This is the official press release:- On February 12, 2003,Crown Odyssey will go into dry dock in Singapore where significant changes will be undertaken. Three restaurants will be added including NCL's signature Le Bistro, an Italian pasta café and a covered al fresco dining café. The ship will also have a state-of-the-art fitness center and children's activity area added. The spa and casino will both be expanded and a number of additional cabins will be added. After she concludes her Spring India and Africa CruiseTours and completes her Summer 2003 Mediterranean season (April 28th through Sept. 1st), Crown Odyssey will enter the NCL fleet on September 15, 2003 with a series of four 11-day Canada/New England sailings from Baltimore. She then repositions to Miami on Saturday, November 1, 2003 before beginning her Chilean Fjords/Strait of Magellan cruises on Sunday, November 16, 2003. On Monday, March 22, 2004 she repositions from Miami to Philadelphia beginning her Spring season sailing to Bermuda on Sunday, April 4, 2004. She repositions to New York to continue sailing to Bermuda beginning Sunday, May 30, 2004.

Ocean Voyager

It was announced in March 2001 that the Star Cruises vessel SuperStar Aries would join the Orient Lines fleet in summer 2002 as the Ocean Voyager. SuperStar Aries was built as the HAPAG-Lloyd Europa in 1982. A Complete postcard history of this ship is available on this link. This transfer did not take place, following the decision that Orient Lines would revert to a single-ship operation using the Marco Polo.
