Mudeford Ferry

This page is under construction

This page is devoted to postcards and photographs of the Mudeford Ferry which runs across the mouth of Christchurch Harbour between Mudeford Quay And Mudeford Sandbank on Hengistbury Head. Harbour cruises and charters are also run. Christchurch Harbour is fed by the Dorset Rivers Stour and Avon. The ferry operates every 12 minutes from Easter to late October, weather permitting. It also operates at weekends in the winter months provided there is a favourable forecast, the sun is shining and the wind strength is reasonable. For details of services see:- www.mudefordferry.co.uk. Please telephone 07968 334441 for up to date information.

Brief History of the Mudeford Ferry:-
The Mudeford Ferry has been operated by many families, including the Derhams, Cokes, Strides and Edgells. Subsequently it was run by the Fosters and the Parkers. Boats were generally 15 ft salmon punts, with flat bottoms and a broad beam. They were rowed by one or two men. There were calls to replace the rowing boats by motor boats from the mid-1960s, but the first motor boat service did not start until summer 1970. The local council provided two 21 ft workboats plus new steps at Mudeford Quay. The service was run by Andrew Russell and William Watson from the quay to the Sandbanks jetty upstream. The rowing ferry had run from the quay across the shorter distance to the beach opposite. Rowing ferries continued to operate for some time after the start of the motorised service. The initial boats were the Ferry Lass and the Ferry Girl. They were joined in 1971 by a 22ft relief boat Wally, which was replaced soon afterwards by the 18 ft Champ. In 1973 William Watson withdrew, and Champ and Ferry Girl were sold. In there place the Deal-built 25 ft clinker-hulled launch Ocean Dawn was bought from Ramsgate. This was replaced in 1977 by the Ferry Lady, with a passenger capacity of 32. The current fleet consists of the 1989 workboat Ferry Dame and the catamaran Josephine. Ferry Dame is 30 ft long and carries 48 passengers. She is 35ft long and carries 70 passengers. Josephine appears at Southampton fairly regularly on charters to see significant liner arrivals.

Beach huts on Mudeford Sandbank
Mudeford beach huts are unusual in that you are allowed to sleep in them and prices rocketed from £30,000 to a peak of
nearly £150,000 in the 21st century. However, at nearby Chesil Beach in Dorset, a beach hut sold for £364,000 in 2007
