Hebridean Island Cruises

These pages are devoted to postcards and photographs of the Hebridean Island Cruises fleet. The company was formed with the acquisition in 1988 of the Caledonian-MacBrayne car ferry Columba, originally built in 1964 for the Oban-Craignure-Lochaline service of David MacBrayne. Following a complete internal refit, she appeared as the luxury cruise ship Hebridean Princess in 1989, carrying just 49 passengers. She operates cruises of up to 14 nights out of Oban, originally around the Western Isles of Scotland. More recently, itineraries have been extended to include Ireland, the Orkney and Shetland islands, and the Norwegian Fjords. A second ship, the Hebridean Spirit, joined the fleet in 2001 from Renaissance Cruises.

Hebridean Spirit

Hebridean Spirit was built as Renaissance Six for Renaissance Cruises in 1991. in 1997 she was sold to Sun Cruises and renamed Sun Viva 2. Sun Cruises faced bankruptcy following the loss of their Sun Viva (ex-Galileo Galilei, Meridian), and their surviving ships were acquired by Star Cruises, Sun Viva 2 becoming the Megastar Capricorn. She was sold again to Hebridean Island Cruises, who had been looking for a second ship for some time. She is chartered back to Star Cruises until March 2001. Before entering service with Hebridean Islands, she will be refitted internally in the style of Hebridean Princess, and accommodation will be reduced from 118 to around 80 passengers. She was renamed by Princess Anne at Leith on 3rd July 2001, followed by an inaugural cruise to Norway.
