Lavoisier - Riviera Prima - Viking Princess

(Chargeurs Réunis - Caribbean Cruise Line - Viking Cruises - Flagship Lines)

This page is devoted to postcards and photographs of the Chargeurs Réunis liner Lavoisier.

Lavoisier was built in 1950 by Ateliers et Chantiers de la Loire at St Nazaire, for Chargeurs Réunis. She was 11900 grt, and saild from Le Havre to Latin America carrying 324 passengers in two classes. She was sold in 1961 to Italian buyers, reappearing as the cruise ship Riviera Prima.

Lavoisier was completely refurbished by Compagnia Marittima Petroli S.p.A. - Genova (owned by Monta & Maliveras) in Palermo Shipyards in 1962. She entered service in November 1962, chartered to Caribbean Cruise Line. Caribbean Cruise Line was a single ship operation, using the Riviera Prima on two to fourteen day cruises from US East Coast ports, including New York, Ft Lauderdale, Jacksonville and Miami. She was claimed to be the first Italian ship exclusively devoted to cruise service. In the summer of 1964, Caribbean Cruise Line suddenly collapsed, and Riviera Prima was sold to Norwegian owners. As Viking Princess, operating for Flagship Lines, she contnued cruising in Caribbean area until 8th April 1966, when she caught fire off Cuba. Two passengers were lost in the blaze, and the remains were scrapped in Bilbao.

The scans of Riviera Prima were supplied by Sergio de Luyk, whose father was master of Riviera Prima from October 1962 until November 1964.
