Canvey Railway and Model Engineering Club

The Canvey Railway and Model Engineering Club members have built two miniature passenger-carrying railways - an elevated dual 3.5" and 5" inch gauge track and a ground-level dual 5" and 7.25" gauge track, together with related infrastructure such as stations, turntables, bridges, etc.

The railway is open  to the public on summer Sundays, when rides are available on both tracks. Operating dates are from the first Sunday in April until the second Sunday in October, 10.30am to 4.00pm. Additionally, members run their locomotives on a number of Saturdays throughout the year when the public are not admitted.

Canvey Transport Museum

Housed in the historic former Canvey & District bus Depot built in 1934 and vacated by Eastern National in 1978, the Castle Point Transport Museum is home to over thirty old and rare buses and coaches alongside vintage commercials, military and emergency vehicles. The display boasts a heritage ranging from the 1940s to the 1990s and in addition to the classic vehicles has a wide range of transport memorabilia and costumes on display.

On departure of Eastern National, the premises were acquired by the Eastern National Preservation Group as a home for their expanding collection and led to the formation of the Museum in1979. Whilst the locally based theme of the ENPG still predominates, the collection now includes examples from across the country.

In addition to the collection of vehicles, the Museum boasts a wide selection of ticket machines, tickets, poster, photographs and uniforms providing plenty for the visitors to enjoy. The museum still has the same working canteen in use today for members now. The working pits and service tools are still in use today maintaining the vehicles in the Museum. The Museum is run entirely by volunteers and is one of the oldest commercial building on the island.

The Labworth

The Labworth Café is a pioneering modernist International style reinforced concrete building overlooking the Thames estuary at Labworth Beach on Canvey Island, Essex. Built in 1932-1933 by Ove Arup, supposedly to resemble the bridge of the Queen Mary, it exists as the only building solely designed by the distinguished engineer.

The café and shelter were designed while Arup worked as the architect, engineer and contractor to the London firm Christiani & Nielsen. The building had been designed in 1932 for the tourists visiting the fast growing island resort. The cafe was opened in 1933 as the Canvey Island Cafe but came to be known as the 'Labworth Cafe' due to the large 'Labworth' text - in reference to the Labworth Estate within which the building is situated - painted around the inland facing third storey.

The decline in popularity of the English seaside holiday led to the Cafe's neglect, and the building narrowly escaped demolition during the major redevelopments of the island's sea defences 1973-1982. By the 1990s the cafe was in a state of disrepair, but it was awarded the status of a Grade II listing in 1996 by English Heritage and then bought in 1998 by local businessman Chris Topping. The Labworth was consequently refurbished, and reopened in the late 1990s with the first floor functioning as the Labworth Restaurant. In 2001, a cafe was added to the ground floor and the building renamed the Labworth Restaurant and Beach Bistro.
